HistoryRochester High School Rugby Club was founded Spring of 2015 with 7 high school students from Century and John Marshall. When asked what their team name would be there was a unified understanding of the bond that rugby created between the two schools. Naturally, brotherhood was founded.
Under the name, Brotherhood Rugby traveled to Eagan, MN from April of 2015 to early June 2015 competing against other schools with established rugby programs. Rugby Sevens was the style of rugby that fit best for the new club. It consisted of 7 players from each team granting the club a massive range to utilize the high speed rugby that they played best. With great heart and under the leadership of Captain Zachary Devries (JM) and Co-Captain Chris Tabor (JM), Brotherhood rugby went on to compete and win 1st place during the Spring High School Rugby Sevens State Championship. The streak continued into the Spring Season for 2016. The teams ranks grew from 7 of the previous season to 14. Heavy hitting cross over athletes caught the bug and their presence was felt on the pitch, especially on the opposing teams. Under the leadership of Captain Chris Tabor and Co-Captain Zoen de Gafferelley, the Brotherhood took home the title a second year in a row. In 2017 the sevens league in Minnesota grew introducing new comers Osseo and Albert Lea who arrived with the goal of bringing down the Brotherhood's streak with both teams handing the Brotherhood their first losses during season play. In the championship the Brotherhood found themselves standing across from Albert Lea, the first team in three years to knock them from the 1st seed. With great heart the Brotherhood fought for their state title and won it for a third year, led by Senior Captain Derek Khammanh, solidifying the Threepeat and continuing the Dynasty of the Brotherhood Rugby Club. In 2018 the word in Minnesota was that if you were going to play Sevens Rugby, the team you want to take down was the Brotherhood. With the leadership of Sr Captains Malik Thomas and Chris Berry, the Brotherhood took this challenge seriously with an increase in captain's practices and more emphasis on student athlete initiation. Rivalries growing in the west in the form of the Albert Lea Eagles and Faribault Junior Boks also made the mid season incredibly challenging for the seasoned champions. However at the National Sports Center in Blaine, the Brotherhood Defended their State Title for the third time and maintained the State Championship for a 4th year in a row. Today rugby continues to grow in Rochester. The Club is open to all schools and now focuses on retaining and building off of the strength of last years victories, Rochester rugby's popularity and members grow in athleticism, leadership, and team work. |
